5 Tips for Creating More Wardrobe Space

Updated February 2023

If you’re like most people, then you’ve probably complained that you can’t fit anything more in your closet at one point in your life. Diminishing wardrobe or closet space is a common problem among many of us, especially those of us that like to buy new clothes with the changing seasons without getting rid of last season’s fashions.

If you’re having trouble finding space for the new pair of pants or coat you’ve purchased, here are a few tips on how you can declutter and create more closet space in your home.

5 Decluttering Tips to Create More Closet Space

Closet clutter got you down? Use these 5 tips to declutter and create more closet space!

How to Create More Closet Space

  1. Get rid of clothes that don’t fit. Donating and decluttering clothes

Donate old clothes for a feel-good way to create closet space.

A lot of people hang onto clothes that don’t fit anymore because they think it will motivate them to lose weight. While you may have the best of intentions, the clothes rarely make a difference in your health goals. Getting rid of clothes that no longer fit is a great way to create space in your closet. Donating old clothes not only maximizes closet space but benefits your community.

Not ready to see them go just yet? Store smaller sizes elsewhere until you reach your weight loss goals, keeping out your favorite piece to use for motivation.
  2. Declutter your closet. Clothes are not the only items that can eat up closet space. Shoes, accessories, and other knick-knacks you have forgotten at the back of your closet can also take up much-needed space. To create more room in your closet, sort through the items and remove the things you no longer want or need. You can also maximize closet space by swapping out basic hangers with thinner options and removing those that are empty so you aren’t tempted to buy more clothes to fill them.
  3. Don’t let floor space go to waste. Closet Decluttering Tips

Don't forget to make the most of shelving and floor space!

If you have a significant number of long-hanging clothes, chances are the space underneath them is not being used to its full potential. Luckily, there’s a way to maximize the floor space inside your closet!

Simply hang all short-hanging clothes at one end of your closet and long-hanging clothes at the other. This should open up floor space that you can use for other belongings. Organize shoes or bulky sweaters on a shelf below the shorter items to maximize space.
  4. Use the closet door for storage. Create more wardrobe space by attaching hooks to the closet door and using them to store smaller pieces of clothing and accessories such as scarves, ties, and belts. An over-the-door shoe holder is another way to maximize closet space. You can use it for its intended purpose and use it to store shoes or use the small pockets to organize other accessories.
  5. Let some things go. Closet Decluttering Tips

Clean out your closet regularly to keep future closet clutter at bay!

Once you’ve freed up more space in your closet, you need to maintain it! For example, every time you buy a new piece of clothing, you should let something go. This way, you won’t run out of wardrobe space in the future.

Need more time to decide what stays and what goes? A good trick is to turn all of your hangers in the opposite direction and mark the day on your calendar. If any of the hangers are still facing the other direction in a year, odds are you won’t miss those items and they’re safe to donate!
